When applying for an EIN, the IRS requires you to name a “responsible party.” This is the individual who controls, manages, or directs the LLC and its funds. For most small businesses, the responsible party is the owner or one of the members. The IRS uses this information to contact someone accountable for the LLC’s tax obligations. Keeping this information up-to-date is important for compliance. Changing the responsible party requires filing Form 8822-B.
